Are we Changing?

We often say:
“People change.”
“Life is always changing.”

But is that actually true? Are we really changing?
Or…
Are we just experiencing different moments
of something that has always been there?

A long time ago, two philosophers saw the world very differently.

One believed… everything is always changing.

The other believed…change is an illusion.

Heraclitus said:“You cannot step into the same river twice.”Heraclitus said: “You cannot step into the same river twice.”Because the water is always flowing. Always becoming something new.

And maybe…
we feel this too.

Our thoughts change.
Our emotions shift.
Even our breath…
is never the same twice.

But Parmenides asked a different question.
Can something… come from nothing?
If not—
then everything must already exist.
And if everything already exists…

(pause)

then what we call “change”…
might not be real.

A Constant World

Parmenides took the opposite view of Heraclitus.
He reasoned that something could not be created from nothing.
Therefore everthing that exists must always have existed, and change is an illusion.

Imagine an arrow flying through the air.
If you freeze time—just one moment—the arrow is not moving. It’s just… there. And if every moment is like this…
when does motion actually happen?

Or imagine a race.
Charles runs after a tortoise.
But every time he reaches where the tortoise was…
the tortoise has already moved forward.
So in theory…Charles never fully catches it.

So now we have a question. Is change real?
Or is it something our mind creates…
to connect one moment to the next?

In ancient Chinese thinking,
there’s a different way to see this.

The I Ching 易經
is not trying to prove whether change is real. It begins with something simpler.
That change… is the nature of life.
That within change…
there is something that does not change.

🌌 Layer 1 — The unchanging (不变)

There are patterns…
that quietly repeat.
Day and night.
Inhale and exhale.
Beginning and ending.
These do not disappear.
They are always there.

🌊 Layer 2 — The changing (变)

But within these patterns…
everything is moving.
Your thoughts.
Your emotions.
Your life… right now.
Always shifting.
Always becoming.

The you might be asking, “Then why we feel stuck even when things are changing”?

Change doesn’t always feel smooth and calm. Sometimes…it feels like everything is breaking. From the core idea from Book Three : Change - The Legend of Korra

After the world shifts (Harmonic Convergence):
  • people suddenly gain airbending
  • power structures begin to break
  • a new ideology rises (Zaheer)

👉 The world becomes unstable

And this is the key message:

Change is not always peaceful.
It can feel like chaos.

Then the villain Zaheer believes:

True freedom comes from breaking all structures.

He quotes:

“New growth cannot exist without destruction.”

But through Korra, we see:

  • change can be painful
  • change can break you
  • change can force transformation

not all change is meant to destroy everything

Western philosophy → “Is change real?" talking about Change vs Illusion
Eastern wisdom → “How does change flow?” talking about Change + Pattern Coexist
The legend of Korra → talking about Change = disruption + transformation

Change is not just something we observe.
And not just an illusion either.
Something… already exists.
And at the same time,
something is always changing in the way we experience it.
And it feels like everything is breaking,
like the world is shifting too fast to hold onto.
Everything lives somewhere in between.
Between what stays…
and what moves.
Between the pattern…
and the moment we notice it.
Life is not about choosing one side when we feel stuck.
But learning how to live through it…
where both exist together.

So maybe…
Change is not just about becoming something new.

It’s about noticing
what has always been there...

and realizing
you are moving within it.

maybe…
you’ve been moving within it all along.
